Advocates for Social Justice is spearheading the effort to raise awareness for positive change as it organized its second peaceful protest in Cedar Rapids.
The event in Bever Park was completed with speakers and prior to a march down First Avenue. The groups goal is to create social, political and environmental change while promoting the objectives of the Black Lives Matter movement, CBS2 reported.
The march came on the heels of passage of legislation targeting police misconduct. The Iowa Legislature approved a bill that not only targets misconduct but bans most choke holds, CBS2 reported. Choke holds came into the national consciousness after George Floyd died in a choke hold by Minneapolis police.
Among those taking part in the march were State Rep. Liz Bennett, who supported the state’s legislation and demonstration.
“It has been time for action for 400 years,” she said, CBS2 reported. Bennett also added the legislation was an important first step toward police reform.
