Over the past couple of weeks, Representative Ashley Hinson, a Republican from Iowa, engaged with communities in Linn and Poweshiek Counties. Her visit included various events and discussions with local residents and businesses.
In Linn County, Rep. Hinson toured BAE Systems, Inc., a company that plays a key role in developing technology for national security. The congresswoman noted the significance of the site, explaining that "the first ever GPS signal was received in 1977 in Cedar Rapids, and BAE continues that legacy."
Rep. Hinson also made a stop at Kirkwood Community College, visiting the Aviation Maintenance Technician Program. She highlighted the program as preparing Cedar Rapids’ next generation for aviation careers, stating the impact of federal funding she helped secure in 2023, which "has taken off and is already making a lasting impact on Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities."
During a meeting with Tim Kindl of the Fun Not Fancy Restaurant Group, they talked about the potential elimination of taxes on tips and the challenges faced by small businesses in Iowa, including inflation and the need for tax cuts.
At the Cedar Rapids Economic Alliance’s Policy on the Rocks event, Rep. Hinson connected with the city's business community. She mentioned that "hearing directly from local business owners about their challenges and successes is always invaluable."
Her tour also brought her to Poweshiek County, where she served as a judge in the Brooklyn Ruritan Club Chili Cook-Off. The event supported the Ruritan Club’s celebration of its 175-year history. Prizes were awarded to Terry Clayton, Kim Bauman, and Jody Clayton in different chili categories.
Rep. Hinson’s visit also included stops at Candice Luter Art + Interiors and attending the St. Patrick Catholic Church Fish Fry in Cedar Rapids. Concluding her activities, she attended a watch party in Hiawatha for the USS Iowa Commissioning.
