Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) introduced a resolution today to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge and to acknowledge the efforts of local conservationists.
"On the 100th anniversary of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, my resolution celebrates the contributions of the refuge to the regional economy, recognizes the work of local conservationists to preserve the area, and encourages continued support for effective conservation and management on the Upper Mississippi River," said Congresswoman Hinson. "While Washington loves to come in with one-size-fits-all mandates, I will continue advocating for locally-led, voluntary conservation practices and leveraging the knowledge of those who have lived and farmed here for generations to preserve the refuge for future generations."
The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge was established on June 7, 1924, by an Act of Congress as a sanctuary for migratory birds, fish, and other wildlife. The refuge conserves more than 250,000 acres along vast stretches of the Upper Mississippi River and its adjacent lands. It provides essential habitat for wildlife while offering opportunities for outdoor recreation, public education, and scientific research.
Annually, there are an estimated four million visits to the refuge for activities such as wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing, paddling, hiking, among others. These visits generate approximately $125 million for the regional economy.
