Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-02) released the following video statement marking the 15th anniversary of the devastating Flood of 2008.
Ahead of this anniversary, Hinson introduced the bipartisan Flood Resiliency and Land Stewardship Act with Congressman Eric Sorensen (D-IL-17). This legislation will improve flood and drought mitigation through existing USDA conservation programs and is supported by the American Flood Coalition.
"Today marks the 15th anniversary of the Flood of 2008. Though the “Epic Surge” is gone, the memories are still fresh. As a reporter, I covered the flood and visited with Iowans who had no idea if their homes or family businesses would survive – their lives and livelihoods hung in the balance. Through the devastation, the resilience of Iowans was evident. We relied on our faith, and on each other, to come back stronger.
"Through private-public partnerships and investments, rural and urban conservation efforts, and flood mitigation projects, we have made great strides in flood resiliency. But there is more to do. That’s why I introduced the bipartisan Flood Resiliency and Land Stewardship Act, legislation that will expand prevention measures and ensure communities can secure the resources to protect themselves from flooding.
"As we commemorate this anniversary, I am reminded while we can’t control the weather, we can control our preparedness, and I am committed to improving our resiliency and protecting Iowans from flooding." - Congresswoman Ashley Hinson
