The City of Marion and Linn County Master Gardeners will host an informational presentation about rain gardens and rain barrels on Monday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center.
Rain gardens improve water quality by promoting the infiltration of rain and reducing stormwater runoff into rivers and creeks. Rain barrels collect rainwater from roofs and downspouts, reducing the amount of water one needs to purchase while also minimizing runoff.
“While designing and constructing a rain garden may seem like a daunting task, there are a variety of resources available and even incentives for doing so,” said Thomas Doyle, environmental specialist for the City of Marion.
This workshop will cover the basics of rain garden design including sizing, plant selection and determining whether your yard is a good location for a rain garden.
The City of Marion provides up to a $400 rebate for residential rain garden projects and a $50 rebate for rain barrels. Information on how to qualify for these rebates will be covered during the presentation and is also available at www.cityofmarion.org/stormwater-management.
