Congresswoman Ashley Hinson of Iowa's 2nd District marked Rural Health Day by releasing a video statement emphasizing her commitment to improving health care access for rural Iowans, with a particular focus on maternal health. In her message, Hinson highlighted the challenges faced by expecting mothers in rural areas who often need to travel long distances to receive medical care.
"Hi, this is your Congresswoman Ashley Hinson," she began. "Today is Rural Health Day! One of my top priorities in Congress is ensuring Iowans in rural areas have the same access to health care as those in urban areas."
Hinson shared her observations from visits within her district, acknowledging the dedication of healthcare providers and underscoring the necessity of accessible maternal care. "As a mom of two, I know the importance of accessing maternal health care," she stated. She expressed concern over expecting mothers having to drive significant distances for medical appointments.
To address these issues, Hinson has been active in legislative efforts aimed at supporting women's health needs in rural communities. Her initiatives include securing funding for maternity health units and introducing legislation to increase trained midwives' availability. Additionally, she mentioned that her legislation focused on expanding stillbirth prevention resources has been enacted into law.
"I am proud of all we have accomplished to ensure more moms can have more healthy babies," said Hinson. However, she acknowledged that further work remains necessary: "While we have made great progress, there is still more work to be done."
The congresswoman reaffirmed her commitment to advancing healthcare accessibility for all Iowans, particularly mothers.
