A Weekly Update from City Manager Ryan Waller

316

City of Marion recently issued the following announcement.

For the Good of the Order

Budget Presentation

Thank you all for being so engaged in the conversation surrounding the budget today. We were able to accomplish what we needed to today and will not be meeting tomorrow. I’ve included the slide presentation for your reference and the full recording of today’s proceedings will be added to our website at www.cityofmarion.org/meetingportal. I cannot thank the Finance Team and all City departments enough for their time and attention to developing this budget. It was a challenging one to prepare, but it will not be one to slow our Progress Ahead! We look forward to continued dialog on this topic between now and March 31, the required date to have it filed with the State.

Marion’s Community Survey Now Open to All Residents

Any Marion resident over the age of 18 who did not receive a copy of The National Community Survey™ by mail is now invited to participate in the online version of the survey. The City conducts a community survey every two years and uses it to help understand resident expectations and measure resident satisfaction. With questions identical to the random sample survey previously mailed to 2,700 households, the online survey asks about the quality of life in the community, local policies, demographics, ratings of local government services and resident use of services. It is now available at https://polco.us/opmarion2021 and will be open until Feb. 10, 2022.

Marion Featured a Big Way in the Cedar Rapids Tourism Guide

The Marion community and multiple local businesses are featured in the latest edition of the Cedar Rapids Tourism Guide. Marion is featured on pages 10, 11, 26, 27, 28, 36, 40, 41, 42 and 43. I’m told that might be the most we’ve ever been featured thanks to our great partnership with Cedar Rapids Tourism. Flip through the digital guide or pick up a hard copy in the Marion Welcome Center or at Marion City Hall. Then, get out and explore!

City Accepting Bids for Log Sale

A second bid opportunity has opened for the logs being salvaged at Faulkes Heritage Woods. Find the Notice to Bidders and change in staging location at www.cityofmarion.org/PublicNotice. Sealed bids are due by 10 a.m. on Feb. 4, 2022.

Lifesaving Award Presented to Alison Graham

Members of the Marion Fire Department and other community leaders were able to help surprise an area fitness instructor with a Lifesaving Award earlier this week. On Jan. 17, Mike suffered a heart attack while working out. Alison was the fitness instructor on duty that morning, and because she acted quickly and without hesitation administering chest compressions, she played a critical role in saving his life. Because Alison had been trained in Community CPR and had the courage to put that training into practice, Mike was able to see Alison presented with a Lifesaving Award from the City of Marion. Ms. Graham and her family are planning to attend the Feb. 3 City Council meeting to be formally recognized by the Council. Coincidently, Marion Fire is partnering with the Rotary Club of Linn County to offer a free Community CPR course on Feb. 19. Follow the link for more information or to register.

Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance Annual Meeting

As one of the region’s newest leaders, I was honored to be part of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance’s Annual Meeting yesterday. Playing off the message of keynote speaker, Marc Williams of FedEx Ground, I was able to share a few things that I plan to “deliver” as Marion’s city manager. It was a great opportunity on a regional stage. I’ve included a copy of the remarks that I shared, for those who are interested.

New Faces in New Places

While there are no new employees joining the organization next week, we do have a few internal promotions and transfers to share.

  • Allie Waterman had been serving as the part-time recreation aide for Marion Parks and Recreation and was recently promoted to part-time program coordinator for the department.
  • James Offerman was previously an equipment operator with the Public Services Department. He has transferred to the Parks and Recreation as Utility II.
  • Nicholas Terbovic has been a network engineer for the IT Department and was recently promoted to assistant director for IT.
  • John Hughes had been serving as interim assistant director for the Public Services Department and is now officially the assistant director of the department.
Congratulations to each of you. Way to keep reaching higher!
