Residents Reminded to Be Weather Aware

Marion

City of Marion recently issued the following announcement.

The National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center indicates that over 36 million people are under High Wind Warnings stretching from the Oregon coast to the Great Lakes. Hazardous travel conditions and power outages are likely, especially in the Heartland.

To prepare:

  • Bring in any unsecured objects from patios, balconies, decks and yards that could blow away to avoid damage or injury.
  • In order to keep holiday displays from blowing away, be sure to anchor them down or bring them in until the high winds subside.
  • Identify an interior room of your house, such as a basement or interior bathroom, that you can take shelter if needed.
  • Postpone visits to heavily wooded areas like parks or trails.
  • Be prepared for power outages. Charge batteries for all essential items.
  • Consider delaying any unnecessary travel, especially if you have a high-profile vehicle that is fairly lightweight.
  • Avoid any outdoor burning as the high winds could cause the fire to spread out of control.
Very strong winds with gusts up to 60-70 mph are expected after dark. Severe storms are possible after dark with wind gusts in excess of 80 mph and isolated tornadoes. High end impacts are possible, especially for east central Iowa.
