Defending champs halt Mustangs' tourney run

3

Mount Mercy University Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 9.

Mount Mercy's semifinal matchup with defending NAIA national champion Missouri Valley went down to the wire on Tuesday night at Ashford Field, but the second-seeded and eighth-ranked Vikings held on for a 1-0 victory over the sixth-seeded Mustangs in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship.

A Ruben Jimenez goal in the 12th minute proved to be the game-winner for Missouri Valley. That was one of 11 total shots and four on goal by the Vikings. Mount Mercy's Joao Pedro Oliveira stopped the other three. The Mustangs could only manage two shots on goal and four in all.

Mount Mercy ends the season at 10-9-0 overall, while Missouri Valley takes a 15-4-0 mark into the Heart of America Men's Soccer Championship final against top-seeded and top-ranked Central Methodist on Friday in Fayette, Mo.
