The City of Cedar Rapids recently partnered with the Cedar Rapids Community School District to implement a program to distribute food to needy families and support local restaurants at the same time, according to a city news release.
From July 14 to July 22, families enrolled in the Kids on Course University and Take 5! reading programs sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Community School District and Zach Johnson Foundation were eligible to receive free meals from participating restaurants.
Locally owned restaurants were invited to provide “take and bake” packaged meals for distribution to local needy families. Distribution was handled by the Cedar Rapids Community School District.
The program provided support for local needy families while also boosting sales for restaurants and their employees during a time of decreased business. Restaurants were reimbursed $5 for every meal prepared, with funding for the program provided by Community Development Block Grant funding.
