City of Marion recently issued the following announcement.
The City of Marion wishes to extend condolences to the family and friends of former mayor and community advocate, Gregory O. Hapgood Sr. Hapgood passed away on Oct. 31, following a long illness.
Hapgood proudly served the Marion community for more than 60 years. He was mayor of Marion from 1969-1972 and served as a trustee of the Marion Water Board from 1974-2021.
“Greg was proud to serve the community he loved,” said Todd Steigerwaldt, general manager of the Marion Water Department. “His 47-year presence on the Water Board, deep knowledge of the water system and sage wisdom will be greatly missed.”
As his obituary states, “He deeply enjoyed building the Marion community and helping its residents achieve an outstanding education and unmatched quality of life.”
Hapgood was a charter member of the Marion Jaycees, a charter member of the Marion-East Cedar Rapids Rotary and chair of the Marion Sesquicentennial committee in 1989 which evolved into the Swamp Fox Festival. He was also one of the founders of the Marion Independent School Foundation, where he served as the board president for more than 30 years.
“Former Mayor Greg Hapgood was a role model for all community builders,” said Marion Mayor Nick AbouAssaly. “Marion is a better place today because of his positive leadership over many decades. His memory will endure in the great impact he had as a servant leader in our city.”
The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church in Marion.
