October Student of the Month: Travis Cooper

Kirk

Kirkwood Community College issued the following announcement on October 8.

What is your background?: I grew up in Ames and Roland between my mom and dad. I originally attended Roland-Story, but ended up graduating from Ames High in 2020.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I am planning on transferring to another school for my BA in performing arts, but Kirkwood was a great place to start the basics while I figure out how I want to focus my art and where I want to go with it.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: I am studying acting and musical theater alongside set design. Theater has always fascinated me ever since I saw my first broadway show in 6th grade. I quickly began acting in shows at a local theater in Ames, where I also was able to practice things like writing, directing, stage managing, set design/building, and a lot more. I began acting at my school and other companies going as far as Des Moines. I was in a show at ISU during my senior year, so by the time I got to college, theater seemed like the only major that made sense.

Are you involved in anything else on campus? If so, what and why?: Outside of classes, I am currently participating in the Kirkwood musical.

What do you do for fun?: For fun I like to listen to or play music. I can play several instruments, so that’s something I do in my downtime. I mainly play acoustic guitar, but I can also play bass guitar, clarinet, and saxophone.

Where do you see yourself in five years?: In the next five years, I see myself graduating from a transfer school and heading to a city where there is a rich theater presence and with any luck, fitting myself into the scene.
