On Friday, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) held a medal ceremony in honor of Iowa veteran and Sumner-native, Corporal Dickie Johnson. During the ceremony, Congresswoman Hinson presented Corporal Johnson with the National Defense Service Medal he earned during his service in the Korean War.

For six years, Corporal Johnson and his family had worked to obtain his service medal and eventually contacted Congresswoman Hinson's office for help. Corporal Johnson’s military records were destroyed in a fire at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in 1973. However, the Hinson team was able to work with the NPRC to confirm Corporal Johnson's military service, allowing the Congresswoman to award him his long-overdue service medal alongside his family.

"It was a privilege to join Corporal Dickie Johnson and his family to properly recognize his service to our nation during the Korean War. The heartwarming ceremony was a fitting tribute to Corporal Johnson, and I was honored to share this special moment with his family. Supporting our nation’s veterans transcends politics and I will continue working to ensure Iowa veterans receive the recognition, benefits, and care they deserve," stated Congresswoman Ashley Hinson.
