Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) has issued a statement following the House's passage of the Equal Representation Act. The legislation mandates the inclusion of a citizenship question in the decennial census and excludes noncitizens from the population count used to apportion U.S. House Representatives and electors for each state. Hinson is a cosponsor of this bill.
"Reinstating the citizenship question on the decennial census will ensure sanctuary states like California and New York are not rewarded for allowing illegal immigrants into their communities. This legislation will guarantee that only American citizens - not illegal immigrants - are considered for federal representation, Electoral College votes, and funding opportunities," said Congresswoman Ashley Hinson.
The Equal Representation Act stipulates that:
- The Census Bureau must reinstate the citizenship question on the decennial census.
- Only United States citizens can be counted towards determining the number of congressional seats, which also influences Electoral College votes in presidential elections.
- All information gathered from the citizenship question must be publicly reported by state no later than 120 days after completion of the decennial census.
