Traffic Control for Downtown Farmers' Market

The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance will be holding the Cedar Rapids Farmers’ Market this Saturday, July 15, 2023, from 7:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. This year, the following streets will be closed for the event from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.:

  • 2nd Avenue SE from the alley between 1st Street SE and 2nd Street SE to 150’ east of 5th Street SE
  • 3rd Avenue SE from the alley between 1st Street SE and 2nd Street SE to 150’ east of 5th Street SE
  • 4th Avenue SE from the alley between 1st Street SE and 2nd Street SE to 150’ east of 5th Street SE
  • 2nd Street SE from 100’ north of 2nd Avenue SE to 100’ south of 4th Avenue SE
  • 3rd Street SE from 100’ north of 2nd Avenue SE to 100’ south of 4th Avenue SE
  • 5th Street SE from 100’ north of 2nd Avenue SE to 100’ south of 4th Avenue SE
Additionally, a “No Parking/Tow Away” zone will be enforced on these streets from 4:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the day of the event per Municipal Code Sections 61.094 and 61.094A. Guests of the Market are encouraged to use the 4th Avenue, GTC, 5 Seasons, or Convention Complex parking ramps located within a few blocks of the Market. For additional parking information, please visit www.parkcedarrapids.com. Parking ramps are handicapped-accessible and market patrons with special needs are encouraged to use those areas.

18th Street SW Closure

Effective immediately, Tuesday, July 11, 18th Street SW is closed between 8th Avenue and 13th Avenue for roadway improvements. Work is expected to take one (1) month. Detour posted.

Traffic Signal at Wiley Boulevard & 20th Avenue SW

Effective immediately, Wednesday, July 12, the intersection of Wiley Boulevard and 20th Avenue SW is operating as an all-way stop due to signal repairs. Repairs are expected to take two (2) days.

Bever Avenue SE Eastbound Closure

Effective immediately, Wednesday, July 12, Bever Avenue SE is closed to eastbound traffic direction between 14th Street and 15th Street for sewer repairs. Work is expected to take three (3) days. Local traffic to seek alternate route.

Intersection of Center Point Road and H Avenue NE for Road Improvements

Effective Wednesday, July 12th, the intersection of H Avenue and Center Point Road will be closed for water main, storm sewer, and road improvements. One through lane going southbound on Center Point Road NE will be maintained at the intersection. Work is expected to last two (2) months. Detours will be posted. 

Mt. Vernon Road Traffic Shift to South Side

Effective Wednesday evening, July 12th, two-way traffic will transition to the south side of Mt. Vernon Rd SE between 14th Street and 17th Street, as roadway improvements begin on the north side. Additionally, access to Mt. Vernon Rd from 14th Street and the south leg of 15th Street will be right-in/right-out only, and there will be no access to Mt. Vernon Rd from the north leg of 15th Street. These traffic impacts will be in place until mid-August. 

Intersection of West Post Road and Gordon Avenue NW Closed for Roundabout Installation

Effective Monday, July 10, the intersection of West Post Road and Gordon Avenue will be closed for the installation of a roundabout. Work is expected to last two (2) months. Traffic is asked to seek alternate routes.  

2nd Avenue Bridge Reduced to One Lane for Bridge Maintenance

Starting Monday, July 10, the 2nd Avenue Bridge will be reduced to one lane going eastbound for bridge repairs. Traffic will need to enter from 1st Street W to use the parking structure, which will remain open during repairs. Access to the plaza will also remain open. Work is expected to last nine (9) weeks. Westbound through traffic to seek an alternate route.

32nd Street NE from Carlisle through Oakland Road Construction Update | June 30

Current traffic impacts:

  • The north half of the road is closed and all traffic will be running in the south lanes
  • One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction
  • All businesses are open and access is maintained
The contractor is currently preparing the north lanes for new pavement, including removing old pavement, compacting the ground, and adding rock. Weather permitting, the paving is scheduled for Friday, July 7th.

66th Avenue SW Construction Update | July 7

The Contractor is now working on Stage 2, Phases E, F & G, with the following traffic impacts:

  • The intersection of 66th Avenue with the access road is open.
  • The only businesses that have access off of 66th Avenue from the 6th Street direction are the Iowa Humane Alliance and Tractor Supply.
  • Access should come from Locust Road via 60thAvenue for all other businesses
  • The intersection of 66th Avenue and 8th Street is fully open
  • Access to the businesses on the north side of 66thAvenue, between 6th Street and 8th Street is through the driveway for Advanced Manufacturing Services
  • Access to the businesses on the south side of 66thAvenue, between 6th Street and 8th Street is through the driveway for LED Crew.
Edgewood Road SW Lane Reductions

Effective immediately, Friday, June 9, Edgewood Road SW is reduced to one lane each direction between 16th Avenue SW and 1st Avenue W for the installation of new traffic signals and curb ramp repairs. Work is expected to take until the end of June.

Kirkwood Boulevard SW Closure between Woodstone Lane and Wright Brothers Boulevard

Effective Thursday, June 8, Kirkwood Boulevard SW will be closed between Woodstone Lane and Wright Brothers Boulevard for the installation of an additional vehicle access to the newly constructed Prairie Creek Intermediate School. Work is expected to be complete in August. Traffic to follow posted detours. Contact Matt Johnson with Hall & Hall Engineers at 319-362-9548 with any questions.

Northbrook Drive NE Closed for Bridge Maintenance

Starting on Wednesday, June 7, Northbrook Drive/Northwood Drive NE will be closed between Nixon Drive and Cimaron Drive NE for repairs to the bridge over Dry Creek. Detours will be posted. Work is expected to take two (2) months.

6th Street SW Closed for Intersection Improvements

Starting on Monday, May 29, 6th Street SW will be closed to through traffic from south of 76th Avenue to just north of Wright Brothers Boulevard, for intersection improvements on 6th Street at Innovation Drive, including the installation of a roundabout. Businesses south of the closure will have access from Wright Brothers Boulevard, and businesses north of the closure will have access from 76th Avenue. work is expected to last until fall. Detours to be posted.

Wiley Boulevard SW Lane Reduction

Starting on Tuesday, May 2, Wiley Boulevard SW will be reduced to one lane in both directions from 16th Avenue SW to Williams Boulevard SW for grading and trail paving. Work is expected to last until early fall. 

Highway 30 Westbound On-Ramp Closure from 6th Street SW

Effective Tuesday night, April 18, 2023, the Highway 30 westbound on-ramp from 6th Street SW will be closed for ramp improvements. Work is expected to be complete in August. Detour to be posted. 6th Street NW Closed for Roadway and Drainage Improvements

Starting Monday, April 17, 6th Street NW from 1st Avenue W to E Avenue NW will be fully closed for roadway and drainage improvements. Traffic control will be in place with detours posted. Local access to residents and businesses will be maintained. Work is expected to last four (4) months. 

1st Avenue W Lane Reductions

Starting Monday, April 10, 1st Avenue W will be reduced to one lane each direction from 18th Street W to 15th Street W, as the 1st Avenue west from 18th Street to 10th Street Pavement Rehabilitation and Traffic Signal Improvements project begins. This phase of the project will take approximately six (6) weeks. The full scope of the project includes pavement repairs, traffic signal upgrades, ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, and storm sewer extension. Additionally, select water valves, hydrants and sanitary sewers will be replaced. The project is anticipated to be completed in late fall.

1st Avenue E Lane Shift for Roadway Improvements

Starting May 22, traffic control switched from the north side of the project to the south side. Mid-July, work will begin on the south portion of the 1st Avenue E intersection with 1st Street SE, through the end of July. At the beginning of August, installation of the roller gate will begin and will continue through the end of August. Drivers are asked to reduce speeds and exercise caution in the work zone, as changing traffic patterns continue. Work is expected to last until November.

1st Street W Traffic Impact Updates 

Starting Wednesday, September 6, 1st Street W will be closed to all traffic from 1st Avenue W to 2nd Avenue SW, and from 1st Avenue W to E Avenue NW, for permanent flood control construction.  The closure is expected to be in place until fall of 2023. East/west traffic on 1st Avenue will be maintained. 

This phase of permanent flood control construction includes relocating the 1st Avenue and 1st Street W intersection approximately 25 feet to the west to accommodate a future flood gate across 1st Avenue W. Additionally, 1st Street SW will be relocated westward, and 1st Street NW will be elevated over the top of the flood control system.
