Kirkwood Boulevard SW Closure between Woodstone Lane and Wright Brothers Boulevard
Effective Thursday, June 8, Kirkwood Boulevard SW will be closed between Woodstone Lane and Wright Brothers Boulevard for the installation of an additional vehicle access to the newly constructed Prairie Creek Intermediate School. Intersection of 19th Street and 12th Avenue SE to Change to All-Way Stop
Effective Tuesday, June 6, the T-intersection of 19th Street and 12th Avenue SE will change to all-way stop control, with the addition of an LED blinking stop sign for eastbound 12th Avenue traffic at 19th Street.
Blairs Ferry Road NE Lane Reduction
Effective Friday, June 2, 2023, westbound traffic on Blairs Ferry Road NE will be reduced to one lane between Dry Creek Lane and Council Street for the installation of a new concrete bus stop. Work is expected to take approximately two (2) weeks.
East Post Road SE Reduced to One Lane for Road Improvements
Starting Tuesday, May 30, East Post Road SE from north of Bever Avenue to south of Indian Creek Bridge is reduced to one lane for road improvements. Flaggers and a pilot car will be directing traffic during this time, with delays expected. Work is expected to take until June 7th.
6th Street SW Closed for Intersection Improvements
Starting on Monday, May 29, 6th Street SW will be closed to through traffic from south of 76th Avenue to just north of Wright Brothers Boulevard, for intersection improvements on 6th Street at Innovation Drive, including the installation of a roundabout. Businesses south of the closure will have access from Wright Brothers Boulevard, and businesses north of the closure will have access from 76th Avenue. work is expected to last until fall. Detours to be posted.
66th Avenue SW Construction Update | May 26
The concrete roadway paving is complete in Stage 1 – Locust Road to railroad tracks. Today, the asphalt paving at the railroad tracks will be complete. On Tuesday, May 30th, Stage 1 will be opened to traffic. There will still be some intermittent lane closures as the sidewalks are complete and the area is backfilled, graded, and sodded.
Storm sewer installation has begun in Stage 2 – West of 8th Street to Access Road. This work is confined to the edge of the roadway and, while underway, one lane of traffic is maintained with yield signs. Phase D will begin on Tuesday, May 30th, and 66th Avenue will be closed on the west half of 8th Street.
Continued traffic impacts include:
- 66th Avenue is closed to through traffic between Locust Street and 6thStreet;
- 66th is completely closed between Locust Street and the eastern driveway to Seegers Truck & Trailer Repair;
- Business access is open from at least one access point at all times;
- Signs on 6th Street currently notify traffic that 66th Avenue is closed from Locust Road to the railroad
- Beginning Tuesday, May 30th, 66th Avenue will be opened at the railroad tracks and will be closed at 8th Street; signs on 6th Street will notify traffic that 66th Avenue is closed from 8th Street to 6th Street
- 8th Street is being temporarily widened to the east to allow full access to the businesses on this street
Work is progressing along Center Point Road and significant progress has been made on the pavement. The mainline roadway pavement is complete on the west half of Center Point Road from Coe Road to Lincoln Avenue, minus the pavement at the railroad tracks. The contractor is coordinating that work with the railroad company. The side street pavement is also complete at Lake Avenue and paving work has begun on F Avenue, west of Center Point Road.
In the next two weeks, you will see completion of the side street pavement at G Avenue and Lincoln Avenue, continued pavement on F Avenue, and sidewalk installation.
Continued Traffic Impacts Include:
- Center Point Road is one-way, southbound;
- All traffic will continue to travel in the one lane in the eastern half of the pavement;
- Work will occur in the western half of the pavement;
- The full width of pavement is open south of Lake Avenue;
- Access is maintained for residents;
- All businesses are open and access to businesses will be maintained.
Starting on Wednesday, May 3rd construction work will continue on the skywalk across 8th Avenue SE for the Mercy Medical Center resulting in multiple lane closures between 8the Avenue SE between 8th Street and 10th Street over a three (3) week period.
- 8th Avenue SE will be reduced to one lane in each direction between 8th Street and 10th Street.
- 8th Street SE north of 8th Avenue will be restricted to right-in, right-out access only.
- 8th Street SE south of 8th Avenue will have right-in access only.
- 10th Street SE north of 8th Avenue will be restricted to right-in, right-out access only.
- 10th Street SE south of 8th Avenue will not be accessible from 8th Avenue.
Wiley Boulevard SW Lane Reduction
Starting on Tuesday, May 2, Wiley Boulevard SW will be reduced to one lane in both directions from 16th Avenue SW to Williams Boulevard SW for grading and trail paving. Work is expected to last until early fall.
8th Avenue SW Closure for Improvements
Beginning Monday, April 24, 8th Avenue SW from 11th Street to 15th Street will be closed to complete storm sewer installation and pavement replacement.
A detour is posted, utilizing Rockford Road, 3rd Avenue, 1st Avenue, and 15th Street. Patrons are able to access stadium parking via 15th Street or Rockford Road, to Veterans Memorial Drive. In addition to the storm sewer and pavement improvements, the project also includes the addition of parking lane bump-outs, sidewalks, and pedestrian crossings. The project is expected to be completed at the end of June.
Ushers Ferry Road NE Lane Reductions for Road Improvement
Starting Monday, April 24, Ushers Ferry Road NE will have lane closures from Oak Creek Drive NE to 42nd Street with flaggers present to help direct traffic during patchwork. Work is expected to take approximately a month.
Ellis Boulevard & 6th Street NW Connector Project Update | April 28
The existing 6th Street NW roadway has been removed, and 6th Street NW is closed north of 1st Avenue to the dead end at the railroad tracks. An additional road closure is at the intersection of F Avenue and Ellis Boulevard NW for roadway crossing work at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing. This closure will be in place from May 2, 2023 – May 5, 2023.
Highway 30 Westbound On-Ramp Closure from 6th Street SW
Effective Tuesday night, April 18, 2023, the Highway 30 westbound on-ramp from 6th Street SW will be closed for ramp improvements. Work is expected to be complete in August. Detour to be posted. 6th Street NW Closed for Roadway and Drainage Improvements
Starting Monday, April 17, 6th Street NW from 1st Avenue W to E Avenue NW will be fully closed for roadway and drainage improvements. Traffic control will be in place with detours posted. Local access to residents and businesses will be maintained. Work is expected to last four (4) months.
Partial Closure of Cedar Valley Nature Trail
Effective April 13, the Cedar Valley Nature Trail between A Street SW and Tait Cummins is partially closed due to the failure of a large culvert. The area is located on a turn (map). Trail users are encouraged to use caution. The issue will be addressed as quickly as possible. Please contact the Parks Department at 319-286-5760 with an questions.
1st Avenue W Lane Reductions
Starting Monday, April 10, 1st Avenue W will be reduced to one lane each direction from 18th Street W to 15th Street W, as the 1st Avenue west from 18th Street to 10th Street Pavement Rehabilitation and Traffic Signal Improvements project begins. This phase of the project will take approximately six (6) weeks. The full scope of the project includes pavement repairs, traffic signal upgrades, ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, and storm sewer extension. Additionally, select water valves, hydrants and sanitary sewers will be replaced. The project is anticipated to be completed in late fall.
1st Avenue E Lane Shift for Roadway Improvements
Starting Monday, April 10, changing traffic patterns will be in place on 1st Avenue E to the north side near 1st Street E as roadway improvements continue. The lane change will be minimal and not affect the current flow of traffic. Detours will continue to be posted. Work is expected to last until November.
Mt. Vernon Road SE Reduced for Roadway and Drainage Improvement
Effective Monday, April 10, traffic on Mount Vernon Road SE from 14th Street to 20th Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction for roadway and drainage improvements. Local access to businesses will be maintained. Work is expected to take approximately nine (9) months.
A Avenue NE Closed Eastbound Beginning Today
Beginning Monday, April 3, A Avenue NE is closed eastbound between 10th Street and 11th Street for Phase 1 of underground improvements, median work, and pavement improvements. Work is expected to last until early fall. Roadway improvements are funded by the City of Cedar Rapids, while streetscaping is paid for by the MedQuarter.
11th Avenue and 5th Street SE Closed for Roadway and Utility Improvements
Starting on Tuesday, March 28, 11th Avenue SE and 5th Street SE from 10th Ave SE to 6th St SE will be closed for roadway and utility improvements. Detours will be posted down 6th St SE to 10th Ave SE. Work is expected to last 3 months.
6th Street SW Intersection Closure
Starting on Tuesday, March 21, the intersection of 6th Street and Commerce Park Drive SW will be closed for reconstruction. Work is expected to last three (3) months. Detours will be posted.
1st Avenue W Traffic Impact Updates
Starting Wednesday, September 6, 1st Street W will be closed to all traffic from 1st Avenue W to 2nd Avenue SW, and from 1st Avenue W to E Avenue NW, for permanent flood control construction. The closure is expected to be in place until fall of 2023. East/west traffic on 1st Avenue will be maintained.
This phase of permanent flood control construction includes relocating the 1st Avenue and 1st Street W intersection approximately 25 feet to the west to accommodate a future flood gate across 1st Avenue W. Additionally, 1st Street SW will be relocated westward, and 1st Street NW will be elevated over the top of the flood control system.
