The City of Cedar Rapids GreenCR sustainability initiative and Public Art Commission invite local artists to create artwork that builds awareness of the City's Community Climate Action Plan, available at CityofCR.com/Climate. Selected artwork will be applied to City sidewalks with environmentally friendly, rain-activated, invisible spray. The temporary art, called "Rain Art," will be visible only when pavement is wet, and the spray lasts up to four months. In May of this year, artwork will be applied to sidewalks at bus stops and trail locations around Cedar Rapids.
Local emerging artists, along with local high school and post-secondary students, are encouraged to apply; the deadline is Sunday, April 2. Up to 10 candidates, chosen by a selection committee, will be selected by Friday, April 14, and will be announced at this year's EcoFest event at NewBo City Market on Saturday, April 22.
Goals of the City's Rain Art project are to:
Build awareness of the City's Community Climate Action PlanIncrease understanding of climate challenges facing Cedar Rapids residentsCreate surprise and delight with temporary public art installationsHighlight local knowledge, community skills and experiences to design and create temporary artEncourage emerging local artists to create art in the public realm
