IN FOCUS: 11.23.22 A Weekly Update from City Manager Ryan Waller

For the Good of the Order

Community Development Director Tom Treharne to Depart for Private SectorTom Treharne, longtime community development director for the City of Marion, is stepping down in early December to pursue a new opportunity in the private sector. During his 21 years with the City, Tom led the long-term planning efforts.

One of his greatest accomplishments was his role in developing the 2010 Central Corridor Plan and reimagining the former railroad right-of-way through the community. In recent years, he was able to see many of the planning efforts come to fruition with the completion of the 6th Avenue corridor and the 7th Avenue Reconstruction and Streetscape Project. Projects like the Neighborhood at Indian Creek, Tower Terrace Road, the Uptown Master Plan and the Central Plaza all happened or are happening under his oversight.

Throughout his career, Tom kept the community at the forefront and was an active partner and supporter of the Marion Chamber of Commerce, Marion Economic Development Corporation and Uptown Marion District. Tom’s energy and collaborative spirit will be missed. We wish him all the best!

Marion to Host Iowa Certified Construction Site Pollution Prevention Inspector TrainingThe Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires that most construction sites in Marion and the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area have qualified personnel who ensure compliance with the Clean Water Act. Qualified personnel can be home builders, developers, contractors, realtors, and others who are certified and responsible for stormwater pollution prevention on construction sites.

The City of Marion is hosting an Iowa Certified Construction Site Pollution Prevention Inspector (ICCSPPI) training session at the Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center on Dec. 8, 2022. Those that are certified are recognized statewide for their credentials to conduct pollution prevention inspections at construction sites.

The training is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes a written exam at the end. For those already ICCSPPI certified, this course also counts toward recertification. Learn more and find the link to register on the City website.

Christmas in the Park is Happening on December 2

Marion will shine brighter this holiday season when the new community Peace Tree is lit during Christmas in the Park and the Peppermint Walk on Friday, Dec. 2 from 4-8 p.m. in City Square Park. Attendees will marvel at the 30-foot LED panel tree during a special tree-lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. The event, which is celebrating 30 years, will welcome the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus at 4 p.m., escorted by the Marion Fire and Police Departments. Visits with Santa will follow, and children are encouraged to bring their letters to place in Santa’s mailbox.
