Stochastic Parrots, Philosophical Zombies, and the World of AI

Robert Todd | Professor of Mathematics

Large language models and other forms of Artificial Intelligence are pushing boundaries every day. They can generate faces of people who don’t exist, write essays, and paint pictures to fit a caption. What would it mean to have an AI as a therapist? Can I be moved by a poem that a computer wrote? We will talk about some of the basics of AI, play with free tools to see examples of what is possible, and consider the ethics of building such tools.

All events of the annual Fall Faculty Series are free and open to the Mount Mercy community and the public. In keeping with its educational mission, Mount Mercy University welcomes presenters with varied perspectives.

Come and learn with us in the Flaherty Community Room (204 Basile Hall) at 6:00-7:00 PM!
