Debris Removal to Resume in Legion Park

As part of the City’s ongoing derecho response, debris removal work is expected to resume in Legion Park this week. Miller & Sons Logging of Dubuque has been hired by the City of Marion to remove any hazardous trees in this area.

The activity will close a portion of the disc golf course and will result in short-term closures on the Boyson Trail between Thomas and Legion parks as the equipment is mobilized. Park users are asked to observe posted signage and keep out of the work zone.

“While the intent is to minimize disruptions to both the park and the trail, we also want residents and visitors to be aware of the heavy equipment in the area and the recovery work that will be happening,” said City Arborist Mike Cimprich.

The goal is to remove trees that have a limited opportunity to thrive into the future due to the damage they sustained during the derecho, to minimize tree risk situations and to use the openings created by the storm to re-establish new trees. Healthy, intact trees will be preserved.

Marion Parks and Recreation Department staff members will monitor the work activity daily to ensure compliance with the contract.

“Unfortunately, there are many trees on this property that are damaged or hazardous,” added Cimprich. “The City has created a reforestation plan and is committed to reestablishing Legion Park as a safe, natural area for recreation.”

Debris will be cleared as conditions allow. The debris removal is expected to take two to three months in Legion Park.
