“Lives Behind Bars,” a free film discussion series hosted at Coe College will create conversation in the Cedar Rapids area about the impact of incarceration on individuals and their communities. Funded in part by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, the film series is open to all and seeks to bring together those with a range of backgrounds and experiences for a productive exchange of perspectives.
The second film we'll screen is Shakespeare Behind Bars. This documentary follows a group of actors incarcerated at Luther Luckett Correctional Facility in Louisville, Kentucky over the course of a year as they rehearse for a performance of Shakespeare's The Tempest. As they explore the play's themes of vengeance, justice, and mercy, troupe members reflect too on their own pasts and crimes. This award-winning documentary premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.
In addition to the screening at Coe, Shakespeare Behind Bars is available through the public library streaming service Kanopy. Log in to Kanopy with your library card number for access.
Film discussions will take place on the final Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM in Hickok Hall on the Coe campus every other month starting March 31. Participants will meet in the Hickok lobby and be assigned to rooms.
Registration is not required but is requested if you know you will attend to help us plan. Click here to register for the discussions (registration optional).
Masks are optional on Coe's campus and will be provided for those who would prefer to wear one.
