Prescribed Prairie Burns Planned on Select Dates in Marion through April

Marion

The Marion Fire Department and Marion Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting prescribed prairie burns of natural areas at Lowe Park, Faulkes Heritage Woods, Waldo’s Rock Park and roadway medians throughout Marion. The burning will occur on select dates with suitable conditions through the end of April.

Prescribed burning is a common tool used in the management of natural areas and promotes the development of a diverse selection of native grasses, forbs, shrubs and trees. A seasonal burn plan improves native habitat and suppresses invasive species.

“Substantial care and planning have gone into these burn projects,” said City Arborist Mike Cimprich. “Our ultimate goal is to improve the vegetative environment and overall ecosystems at these locations.”

Daily weather conditions will be taken into consideration and onsite supervision will be provided by the Marion Fire Department for optimum safety. Some short-term road closures will occur when work is happening adjacent to the roadway.

The plans have been approved and permitted by the Linn County Health Department – Air Quality Division.

Contact the Marion Parks and Recreation Department at (319) 447-3580 or the Marion Fire Department at (319) 377-8237 with questions or for additional information.
