City Seeks Public Feedback on Draft Public Art Plan

339

City of Cedar Rapids recently issued the following announcement.

The City of Cedar Rapids and the Visual Arts Commission are preparing a Public Art Plan. The plan incorporates input from residents and stakeholders to define a vision for the City’s public art program. The plan will contain initiatives and implementation steps to achieve community goals over the next five–ten years.

Following public engagement events and online surveying last summer, a draft Public Art Plan was compiled and presented at the February 10, 2022 meeting of the Visual Arts Commission. Residents may review a summary of the plan on the City’s website and provide feedback on the plan draft through an online survey tool. Feedback will be collected through March 5, 2022.

The draft plan contains five goals, with more than 40 action items housed under each goal. The goals include:

  1. Continue to enhance and broaden public art throughout the city.
  2. Encourage local and regional artists to create art in the public realm.
  3. Cultivate partnerships to support the Public Art Program and advance city priorities.
  4. Create a sustainable administrative and funding structure.
  5. Implement a maintenance plan for the current and future collection.
Public art engages community and brings vitality to public places and private developments. It is a powerful tool for artistic self-expression, community identity, equity and inclusion, appreciation of art, and celebration of place.

“Cedar Rapids has long demonstrated leadership in its support for public arts,” said Stephanie Schrader, community service coordinator for the City of Cedar Rapids. “The City’s first Public Art Master Plan is an important tool to foster a high-quality, public art realm. This plan provides a framework for vibrant, inclusive public art that reflects the unique character of Cedar Rapids.”
