Join us in celebrating Black History Month with three-time author and National Book Award finalist Danez Smith. Come for a poetry workshop at 2:00 PM or a performance and Q&A at 7:00 PM! Both events will have book signings.
About the Author
Danez Smith—author of three books of poetry—is a Black, Queer, Poz writer and performer from St. Paul, Minnesota.
Their second book, Don’t Call Us Dead (Graywolf Press, 2017), won the Forward Prize for Best Collection and the Midwest Booksellers Choice Award. It was also a finalist for the National Book Award. Their first book, [insert] boy (YesYes Books, 2014), won the Kate Tufts Discovery Award and the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry.
Danez has received fellowships from the Poetry Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, the Montalvo Arts Center, Cave Canem, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Danez's work has been featured widely, appearing on platforms such as Buzzfeed, The New York Times, PBS NewsHour, Best American Poetry, Poetry Magazine, and on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
They are a member of the Dark Noise Collective, and with Franny Choi, co-hosted the first five years of VS, a podcast sponsored by the Poetry Foundation and Postloudness.
Danez’s third collection, Homie, was published by Graywolf in January 2020. They have also won several poetry slams.
