Linn County - IA recently issued the following announcement.
The Linn County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a new Linn County supervisor districts map (called Supervisor District Map Plan 1) as part of the required redistricting process. Redistricting is the process of redrawing boundaries for political districts in the United States and is required by law to account for population changes every 10 years following the federal decennial census to ensure equal representation. The map was drawn by the Legislative Services Agency, per Iowa law.
The Supervisors’ approval comes after the Linn County Temporary Redistricting Commission held a public hearing on Feb. 8 to review the proposed supervisor districts map and receive alternative maps from the public. Following the public hearing, the Temporary Redistricting Commission unanimously approved the map drawn by the Legislative Services Agency in a 5-0 vote.

Based on data collected from the 2020 census, total population for Linn County is 230,299. Linn County has three supervisor districts. As a result, the ideal population size for each county supervisor district is 76,766 persons. The maximum allowable population deviation from the ideal district size is 768 persons. The new map allows for a population of 76,946 in District 1; 76,757 in District 2; and 76,596 in District 3.
According to Iowa law, cities shall not be divided into two or more county supervisor districts unless the population of the city is greater than the ideal size of a district and cities shall be divided into the smallest number of county supervisor districts possible. Based on this requirement, cities that did not exceed the ideal size of a district were not divided into two or more county supervisor districts in the plan. The city of Cedar Rapids exceeds the ideal size of a district and was divided into the smallest number of county supervisor districts possible.
Throughout the redistricting process, the Linn County Temporary Redistricting Commission held five public meetings, including the public hearing. At these meetings, the commission discussed the redistricting process and allowed for public comment.
