CITY OF CEDAR RAPIDS: 16th Avenue SE Floodgate Starts April 7

City of Cedar Rapids issued the following announcement on Apr. 1.

Construction is scheduled to begin on the 16th Avenue SE floodgate on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. The 16th Avenue Bridge will be closed to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists starting April 7 and is scheduled to re-open this fall. The contractor may begin bringing in equipment starting as early as April 2, 2020.

A detour has been established for both motorists and trail users via the 12th Avenue Bridge.

Access to Czech Village will remain open via C Street SW and 16th Avenue SW. The intersection of 2nd Street SE and 16th Avenue SE in NewBo will also remain open. Detour signs and "Business Access Open" signs will also be in place.

To combat the spread of COVID-19, the contractor will be following safe worksite practices while construction is underway.

Project Highlights

The 16th Avenue SE floodgate rolls across the road, closes, and locks into place in approximately 45 minutes, protecting the community and neighborhood to the 2008 flood volume. The gate will be approximately 14 feet high and 67 feet long. The project is anticipated to be completed in fall 2020. A similar gate is planned for the west side of the bridge in 2022.

2020 Flood Control Projects

Several flood control projects are on track to begin this construction season, including:

Lot 44 Levee (between 9th Ave – 12th Avenue SE)

Construction: May 2020 – May 2021

Project details: Lot 44 parking restrictions will be in place during construction. Levee will protect to the 2008 flood volume. 

Amphitheatre Restroom

Construction: May 2020 – May 2021

Project details: Built-in floodwall, plus storage for events.

3rd Avenue SE Floodgate

Construction: September 2020 – Spring 2021

Project details: 3rd Avenue closed during construction. Gate protects to the 2008 flood volume.
