No public comments were presented during a Feb. 26 first public hearing Cedar Rapids City Council had on a proposed 3% property tax increase.
A new state law requires the public hearing because the council is considering the approximately 3% tax increase.
The tax increase will pay for Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System’s (IPERS) benefits for retirees, technology upgrades and facility operating costs, according to KCRG.
IPERS provides a retirement plan, working with Social Security benefits and personal savings, it states on its website.
The city council conducts a public hearing during a council meeting to receive information and hear public comments on dispositions of city-owned property and more, according to the city's website. Each person commenting typically may speak up to 5 minutes, at the discretion of the mayor.
The council usually meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at council chambers, third floor of City Hall, 101 First St. SE.
